Surface Preparation for 6061-T6 Aluminum

Q. Could you recommend a surface preparation process for 6061-T6 aluminum? Component will be painted and used in a scientific ccd camera application requiring vacuum levels of 0.1 - 5 T.

A. The best pretreatment is a chromate conversion coating complying with MIL-C-5541 Class 1 A. However, I cannot tell you anything about potential out gassing under vacuum and for that information I suggest you call or write to Henkel Surface Technologies or Chemetall, since they are probably the largest suppliers of this pretreatment system.

Good luck,

Ron Joseph
