Painting a Metal Roof Q. I recently bought a Lake cottage in Florida, and the roof has been
painted a pale yellow. I would like to change it to a Hunter Green. What are
the steps I will need to take in order to do this? The house is approximately
30 years old, but I do not know how old the roof is. First and foremost you must clean and prepare the surface of the metal by removing
all loose paint, rust, dirt, oil, and grease. After cleaning the surface, Sand
or abrade any remaining paint with sand paper or a wire brush. Clean the surface
again, and remove all sanding dust.
Consult with your local specialty paint supplier, ask for specific recommendations
for a primer and compatible top coat system to use for this application. They
will also inform you of the ability to match a desired or custom color.
Please be aware that paints, coatings and solvents are chemicals and therefore
you should always pay attention to proper handling procedures and be prepared
to wear protective clothing, such as respirators, gloves, coveralls, etc. For
further information on the health and safety requirements for the coatings and
solvents you wish to use we strongly advised you to contact your local coating
supplier. If possible, go the extra step and look for this information on the
website of the product vendor.
