Alodine Conversion Coating of Aluminum

Q. I wonder if using the transparent alodine treatment (i.e. henkel alodine1001) alone on a 5083 aluminium for sea going boat would be of any benefit at all. We plan to acid rince the boat in any case to get rid of the mill scale, but we are not planning to paint it. Thanks for your answer!

A. In my opinion a single clear coat of a conversion coating, such as Alodine is not adequate to protect your aluminum boat. At best you might get a few weeks of protection. If the bat will be used in sea water, you can soon expect to see pitting of the aluminum, and eventually the pits will propagate through the substrate.
