Rating of House Paint

Q: We have just purchased a home built in the 1960's in Denver; we are about to launch a complete painting of the interior and exterior of the home.  We have made our color selections but are stumped on trying to determine the brand that will be most durable, easy to clean and maintain its vibrancy.  Our painter recommends Diamond Vogel; I have always had good results with Benjamin Moore and a close family friend operates a local Sherwin Williams store.  Our painter is resistant to using Sherwin Williams reporting that it splashes too much.  I cannot find any reliable rating service.  Can you provide any insights and particular recommendations regardless of whether I have mentioned a brand name or not?

A: I do not have any information regarding comparative results between the various national paint manufacturers.  In my opinion, your best bet is to go to the annual Consumer Reports that covers the evaluation of house paints.  If I needed to make a comparison for my own personal use, I too would refer to Consumer Reports.  Your public library should have a copy.

Best wishes,

Ron Joseph
