Barium Sulfate as a Paint Filler, Ingredient

Q. Our PPG Ultra Urethane (low VOC - 70% Solids by volume) was rejected on a WA state PUD project because it contained the filler pigment barium sulfate. The reason was that they feel it will be like lead, cadmium, chromium, etc. in the future. Our chemists and hygenists said they have never heard of this pigment being rejected by any North Americian agency before. Have you heard of any problems with barium sulfate with regards to environmental issues etc.? From what I understand, the pigment is used exclusively in enamels of all generic types and many different manufacters. Thank you for your help and keep up the good work!

Thank you for your e-mail. I have never heard of barium sulfate being compared with lead and chromium as a toxic compound. If I were you in your situation I would research the OSHA and NIOSH web sites to see if they have any references relating to this topic.
