Thermoplastic and Thermoset Paint Coatings

Q. How can I identify between thermoplastic and thermosetting paints in the field?

A. To the best of my knowledge there is no good on-site method for determining between thermoplastic and thermoset coatings. You need to know the resin from which the coating was made and then determine from the literature or data sheets whether that particular resin is thermoplastic or thermoset. I'm sure there are laboratory tests that can be used to make that determination, but these are not performed in the field.
