Replacing TT-E-527 with CARC Paint

Q. WE HAVE A PAINT STORE IN MARYSVILLE,WA AND WE SELL MANY TYPES OF MIL-SPEC PAINT. I HAVE RUN INTO A ROADBLOCK THOUGH, I HAVE CUSTOMERS ASKING FOR THE SAME PAINT THAT IS PAINTED ON THE HUMMERS USED IN THE ARMY. THEY SAY THAT NOT ONLY IS IT TOUGH, IT DOES NOT MAR LIKE OTHER FLAT PAINTS AND IS VERY EASY TO USE, SO THAT SOLDIERS CAN RE-APPLY THE PAINT IN THE FIELD WHEN NECESSARY. CAN YOU TELL ME THE MIL-SPEC OR WHATEVER SPEC THIS PAINT IS AND POSSIBLY WHERE I CAN BUY IT. CURRENTLY, WE ARE SELLING TT-E-527 AS OUR CAMMO PRODUCT. TT-E-527 WAS SUGGESTED BY THE FACTORY THAT WE BUY OUR MIL-SPEC COATINGS FROM. THEY ALSO SUGGEST USING A SATIN POLYURETHANE, BUT I WANT TO OFFER THE EXACT PRODUCT USED ON TODAYS HUMVEE.

A. Specification TT-E-527 was a federal standard, not military specification and is based on an alkyd, solvent-based (oil-based ) technology. The military now uses single- or two-component polyurethane to coat its equipment, and the two specifications most commonly used are MIL-C-53039 and DTL-MIL-C-64159. The first is a single-component moisture curing polyurethane, while the second is a two-component water dispersible polyurethane (WD CARC). The HUMVEE is coated with MIL-C-53039; however, many of the army depots and bases are now changing over to the DTL-MIL-C-64159 product. Both products are excellent and can be purchased directly from either Hentzen Coatings or Sherwin Williams. You can select the one that better suits your application purposes; they have almost the same performance properties, although the WD CARC has been shown to have superior long-term exterior exposure performance. Do not expect to be able to purchase these coatings in a local industrial paint store!

By the way, the Hummer is a GM vehicle that is painted with high gloss polyurethane, while the HUMVEE is made by AM General and has CARC coating discussed above.

Ron Joseph
