Repainting a Metal Roof

Q. I need to repaint my house roof (a 4 square circa 1922 in Maryland) with a typical metal roof. The roof has been painted previously with the standard silver aluminium type paint. There is a little bit of rusting beginning to occur.

I would like to change the color. What painting items should I use for ... treatments/primers . .. bases and finish ... I would like to go to a darker gray color if possible. Or even switch to maybe a maroon/red.

A. In repainting the metal roof on your home, you must be certain to remove any loose coating by scraping the flaking or lifting paint, removing any rust with a wire brush and then abrade the remaining exposed metal by wire brush or sanding.

Use a good cleaning detergent solution such as simple green, to wash the metal surface prior to the application or any coatings. Be certain that the surface is good and clean, free of any oils, grease, dirt or debris.

My suggestion for the roof coating material would be to look into the "Henry" roof coatings products or equivalent. Visit your local home improvement center for any further suggestions, and color selection.

Please be aware that coatings and solvents are chemicals and therefore you should always pay attention to proper handling procedures and be prepared to wear protective clothing, such as respirators, gloves, coveralls, etc. For further information on the health and safety requirements for the coatings and solvents you wish to use we strongly advised you to contact your local coating supplier. If possible, go the extra step and look for this information on the website of the product vendor.
