I have been solicited by a company called Tex Cote claiming that their texture coat has a lifetime warranty, bridges gaps up to 1/8" thick and will never fade, chip, blister or fade. Can you tell me anything about the differences between a solvent based texture coating and a water based liquid vinyl water based paint as it relates to its permeability, elongation properties, filling capabilities, etc. Also, some of these products require a priming bonding agent. Is the primer always requires for these types of products? I have read up as much as I can on what type of product is the best but would like to know your thoughts. A. Waterborne paints and coatings have matured to the stage where they are in most cases at least as good as solvent based paints. I cannot tell you specifically about the comparison of their physical properties, but the company's tech data sheets should provide this information to you. I am aware that Tex Cote is used successfully by the Department of Transportation (DOT), and if you need more info I suggest that you call some of the DOT managers in several states to see what their experience has been. Always follow the vendor's recommendations regarding the use of primers. Some coatings can be applied directly over the substrate, while others need a primer. Again, if you have any doubts, call the folks at the various state or city transportation departments for feedback. For the most part you will find them to be very cooperative and helpful. Good luck.
