Automotive Re-Painting

Q. What would be the BEST paint for an automobile? I am looking to repaint a Rolls, I want a black as black can get. Is there any difference in paint product, or is it all in how it is prepared ie: color sanding etc. ?

I would have to say that 90% of the quality of any paint job is directly related to the quality of the prep work. Based on that statement, you should take extra care and effort in preparing the surface of the car for painting. What looks like an imperfection in the surface preparation process will in fact show up as an imperfection in the top coats.

The paint job is only as good as the surface prep work!!!!

There are several after market automobile paint manufacturers that offer excellent products. Make your selection based on the color that you desire.

Most all of the good high quality paints for automobile applications today are two component polyurethanes. These coatings are designed for this type of application, and are very durable.

I am assuming that you intend to apply the paint yourself? I don't recommend that you paint a car in your garage. Gain access to a high quality automotive paint spray booth, or hire a quality paint spray shop.

If you do intend to paint the car yourself, please take extra precautions to insure that you do not create any hazards such as electrical sparks, or open flame. Be certain that you have good air ventilation, proper breathing protection, eye protection, proper clothing, gloves and of course a dust free environment so you get a good clean paint job.

Sometimes things are best left for the professionals.

Please be aware that coatings and solvents are chemicals and therefore you should always pay attention to proper handling procedures and be prepared to wear protective clothing, such as respirators, gloves, coveralls, etc. For further information on the health and safety requirements for the coatings and solvents you wish to use we strongly advised you to contact your local coating supplier. If possible, go the extra step and look for this information on the website of the product vendor.

Best wishes,

Ron Joseph
